How To Add More Color Into Your Wardrobe

So I asked you all on Instagram to submit your style struggles and questions on color pairings were definitely a common theme. I mean I get it, seasons are changing and for the last couple years neutrals have been in the forefront of our capsule wardrobes. Thus, here I am to give us all a little refresher.

Finding Your Shade

All colors are not created equal. So you’re going to want to start by finding the right color for your skin tone. There can be a lot to unpack with this step and varies by skin tone but I’ll simplify it for you. Pull up a color wheel and rule out colors that make you look pale, sick, washed out, ashy, or dull. Take the remaining colors and hold them to your face. What you’ll be looking for here are colors that make your eyes pop, your skin glow, compliment your hair color and skin undertones and voila.

Like I said, a lot to unpack so I just threw you for too much of a loop feel free to book a virtual styling session with me here.

Principles of Color Matching

This principle is key and will change the way you think about color matching: shades of brown, navy, and gray are neutrals that you can and should pair as you would black and white. Remember this tip and you’re golden.

Navy Is the New Black

Ease into adding more color by simply replacing your black with navy. This is a great way to brighten up your assortment any time of the year. My personal favorite color combos for fall are brown or darker green on top and navy on bottom. There isn’t a more chic and effortless color combination.

One Color At A Time

Trying to wear more than one non neutral pop of color at a time can be overwhelming. If blue is your color, try throwing on just one blue piece to pair with your neutrals. Until we’re ready to go all out with mixing colors, trying to match even the same color in different shades can be a recipe for a headache.

Have Fun With It

Let’s be honest, the “rules” fashion of 2020 are more free and loose as ever. So play around with color and never forget to just have fun with it. After all, it’s getting dressed not brain surgery.
